How PortuQuest works
Four separate measures, so that no one of them can buy another.
1. Language mastery
- A lesson is passed the first time you score at least 80% on it. Untimed play is always available.
- Only your first answer to each question counts. Typing accents and hyphens correctly matters: an answer that differs only by an accent counts with a warning, except where the accent changes the word (têm / tem, porquê / porque) or in verb conjugations.
- Passed lessons come back for review after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60 days. A review done on time and passed pushes the next one further out; one that goes badly brings it back the next day. You never lose a passed lesson.
2. Making Portugal home
- Each town has two lessons. Pass both and you're invited to its festa: 8 mixed questions from those lessons. Score 80% and the town feels like home.
- % of Portugal = towns that feel like home ÷ towns on the trip (11), rounded down. It is not land area.
- When a lesson is due for review, its town misses you (a red marker on the map). Catch up with a quick review. The town stays home either way.
- Portugal is home when all 11 towns are, which means you've passed every A1 and A2 lesson.
- Your trip is your own. Other players compete with you on points, but nobody can take your towns.
3. Competitive points (weekly leagues)
- Lesson passed for the first time: 20. Review done when due and passed: 10. Festa won for the first time: 30.
- Daily challenge: 10 per correct answer (10 questions), plus up to 20 if you choose the timed mode, scaled by how many you got right. One attempt a day; the same questions for everyone.
- Challenges: win 15, draw 8, loss 3; the same two players score at most 3 challenges a week.
- Replaying lessons you have already passed earns no league points.
- Leagues run Monday to Sunday (Lisbon time) in divisions Bronze, Prata, Ouro, Azulejo. The top 20% with at least 50 points move up; in divisions of 5 or more, the bottom 20% move down.
4. Business-visit rewards
- When you use a member deal at a partner business through Algarve Offseason (scanning the QR code at the till), you can play a short Portuguese mission for a collectible tile.
- One reward per business every 30 days, at most 3 a week, claimed within 7 days of the visit.
- Visit rewards never count toward lessons, towns or league points.
Privacy
- Other players see your game name, never your email. You choose who sees it: only you, signed-in players, or anyone (share links).
- Challenges are off until you turn them on, for friends or for anyone. You can block or mute any player.
- The optional conversation partner runs on our own server. What you type to it is not stored, apart from a count used to limit how often it is used.
